The Phe Festival will celebrate its 11th edition on September 4 and 5 in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. The festival describes this edition as the most comprehensive in its recent history, featuring a lineup that brings together international, national, and Canary Island artists and, for the most part, moves away from traditional styles. A commitment to diversity, openness, and multiculturalism that once again shapes the programming of the port-town festival. Ibibio Sound Machine
One of the most distinctive musical propositions in quite some time, Ibibio Sound Machine is the British project led by Eno Williams dedicated to the most energetic fusion possible of Afrobeat, funk, electronic music, and post-punk. The blend of African rhythms with synths, funky basslines, and a punk attitude turns their songs into genuine dance anthems, always with Williams’s powerful voice at the forefront. Their infectious energy and anthems like ‘Concept of Love’, ‘The Talking Fish’, or ‘Electricity’ promise great moments.
Fat Dog
The Tenerife festival clearly bets on Fat Dog in its lineup, a London-based band that takes punk into techno, electronic, and rave territories with results as electrifying as the brilliant ‘Shit Love’ or ‘Cancel Me (I’m Tired)’, a true dance-rock banger that will transport you straight to the golden era of bloghouse. Their frenetic live show and their debut ‘Woof’ have made them one of the most exciting names on the new British scene.
Getdown Services
Another one of those British groups born from the post-punk vein but exploring other paths, the Bristol duo have made a name for themselves with the supremely sexy ‘Dog Dribble’ and have solidified their proposition with the album ‘Massive Champion’, released this very year. There you’ll find tracks as stylish as ‘The Radiator’, showcasing their blend of post-punk, funk, spoken word, and danceable electronics. A boldly fun and hedonistic proposition, with a live show designed to make you dance as much as to succumb to their peculiar sense of humor.
Rufus T. Firefly
Rightfully and deservedly recognized with the Ruido Award for Best Album of the Year, Rufus T. Firefly continue presenting the excellent ‘Todas las cosas buenas’ across Spain and this time Tenerife will be able to hear live wonders such as ‘Canción de Paz’ or ‘La Plaza’, in addition to discovering one of the best and most exciting concerts on the current national scene. Geordie Greep, from Black Midi, watched them ‘bewitched’ at the Canela Party.
FAEDA
No one can doubt Phe Festival’s commitment to guitars in this edition, and another of the lineup’s groups that epitomize that direction are the Scots FAEDA, whom you shouldn’t miss if you like emo-tinged rock, intense melodies, and sharp guitars; if you’re into all that, you might hear ‘All Thorns No Roses’ and fall in love instantly. Note: they have not released an album yet.
Natalia Doco
Among the folk-rooted proposals of the program, Natalia Doco stands out, the Argentine singer based in Paris who blends Latin American folk with spirituality, ancestral roots, and contemporary sounds. Her catalog includes chanson-inspired gems like ‘Respira’, while in ‘Quédate Luna’ she heads to the dance floor. At Phe she presents the songs from ‘Hacha’, her new album, in a set that balances folk, ritual, and the experimental.
Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip)
The vocalist and co-founder of Hot Chip, in addition to solo producer and DJ, Alexis Taylor will unpack at Phe his new solo album, ‘Paris in the Spring’, which on tracks like ‘I Can Feel Your Love’ preserves the electronic and pop elegance of his main project. His sets traverse disco, house, electro, techno, soul, and boogie, connecting the tradition of dance music with contemporary electronic aesthetics.
ARXX
The Brighton-based queer duo formed by Hanni Pidduck and Clara Townsend could be breaking through soon thanks to the immediate pop, punk, and grunge edge of songs like ‘Ride or Die’ or ‘Crying in the Carwash’. ARXX’s potent guitar-driven energy guarantees a great rock show that will win new fans, after the group has shared stages with artists such as Yungblud or Fletcher.
Choclock
One of the Canary Islands’ rising promises in the last decade within urban music, Choclock has built a career across several records exploring the boundaries of R&B, hip-hop, and indie along with other international sounds; the mutant ‘Caprese’—between R&B and 80s freestyle— or the sensual ‘True Love’ are among the jewels of this artist’s discography, who has collaborated with names such as Dellafuente or Cruz Cafuné.
Barry B
One of the new idols of national alternative rock, especially since the viral success of his colossal single with Carolina Durante, Barry B arrives in Tenerife to present that new album which should mark his big leap, and from which singles like ‘ Silverado’ or, more recently, ‘Se Pega Igual’ have emerged. And we don’t know if that wonderful collaboration with Gara Durán will also appear on his album. After ‘Chato’ and the EP ‘Infancia Mal Calibrada’, Barry B continues rising higher.
