Los Javis Discuss Their Relationship: Everything Has Improved

August 16, 2026

Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo granted a new interview this week to El País Semanal, the first they’ve given together since announcing their separation. It took place during the production of their upcoming film, La bola negra, which will be released in cinemas on September 25.

The pair of directors began by discussing the political content of their films, insisting that “the social advances of the community in Spain have been achieved by the left and against the right” and that “we aren’t trying to tilt anything.” “Bringing it into our realm, into sexual and gender identity, does not mean the film lacks political and ideological value,” they commented.

In the same interview, they explained how the end of their romantic relationship has not conflicted with their creative alliance, but rather the opposite: “We’ve improved because before we were shading our entire personal life with work and there was no room for growth. Now, when we go to work, we get to work and that’s it,” Ambrossi said.

Both agreed that their situation has greatly improved since the breakup, with Ambrossi asserting that he loves Javier Calvo “from a healthier place,” and Calvo noting that there is now “more admiration and less competition.”
