A few months ago, Pablo Tocino reviewed on our site Audrey Hobert’s album, a colleague of Gracie Abrams who was trying her hand solo after co-writing “That’s So True.” The track “Sue Me” even had a small run on our modest weekly Top 40.
However, it is now that the song is going viral in English-speaking countries. This week it climbs to number 29 in the United Kingdom, its peak thus far. It has also struck a chord in other markets such as the United States (peaking at 92), Ireland, Australia, and Canada. It is our Song of the Day today.
If Audrey Hobert’s voice bears a slight resemblance to Taylor Swift’s, “Sue Me” dives into 80s electropop territory in a way the author of “1989” didn’t fully dare, not even during the “Styles” era. It’s a clearly catchy bop.
Released in May 2025 as Audrey Hobert’s debut, the song is about the longing to feel desired again after a breakup. Hobert explained that she wrote it a week after reconnecting with someone she had dated, and about the return of feeling desired. Hence the chorus “Sue me, I wanna be wanted,” while the rest portrays a reunion at a party where alcohol—specifically rum—takes the lead and includes the standout line “fucking your ex is iconic.”
