This week’s Spanish singles chart confirms that the hit from Karol G’s latest album, ‘NO ME ARREPIENTO DE SENTIR TANTO’, isn’t the one the Colombian artist had planned. ‘BbY WOW’ has climbed the rankings since its debut last week at number 30, reaching number 10. It seems there was a need to bring together rusowsky and Judeline as collaborators.
The singer’s most recent single from the album was her melancholic duet with Bruno Mars, ‘Still’. However, chart data — ‘Still’ never managed to enter — and Spotify’s streaming numbers suggest that this should have been ‘BbY WOW’, a track that almost doubles the streams of the track by the author of ‘The Romantic’.
That first clue we’ve already mentioned. While ‘Still’ is a conventional ballad, ‘BbY WOW’ radiates a fresh and summery energy that fans have welcomed with open arms. It leans on reggaeton rhythms (produced by Tainy, rusowsky, Omer Fedi, and Karol G) to build an alternative-pop track in which its catchy melody is everything: ‘Your song plays and you’re not here by my side / I know I shouldn’t, that I think of you too much’, Karol sings in the chorus.
‘BbY WOW’ also makes strong use of its collaborators, with rusowsky’s pitched voice opening the track before Karol’s verses make clear that this is about a lost relationship: ‘Therapy for what? For what use is pulling you out of my chest?’, he sings. The Madrid-based artist also has a solo verse, while Judeline and her ethereal voice handle the bridge. It isn’t a predictable track, and that’s precisely what has helped it to triumph.
In the rest of the chart there are no further surprises and, in fact, only two entries: ‘Donde Hubo Fuego Cenizas Quedan’ by Anuel AA, directly at number 30, and ‘Matanza en el hotel’ by Ultraligera, which barely made it in at position 99.
