Following the small scare over ‘Roses’, CHVRCHES have released a new song. ‘Overthinker’ is the second single from their upcoming album, ‘All The King’s Men’, set for release on January 22, 2027. ‘Overthinker’ marks a substantial improvement over the album’s first single, even though it remains distant from CHVRCHES’ classic sound, and that is why it’s the Song Of The Day for today, Thursday.
The Scottish group embraces in ‘Overthinker’ a vaguely alternative pop-rock sound, very much in line with the early-2000s radio formula, featuring guitars and programmed beats, as well as even male ad-libs that respond to Lauren Mayberry’s melody. The composition is classic, built on a crescendo that reaches catharsis before delivering a beautiful resolution.
‘Overthinker’, one of the most influential words of the last few years in the online world, to the extent that Spanish artists like Natalia Lacunza have incorporated its literal translation, ‘overthink’, into their own works, tackles complicated family relationships, a theme not so frequently explored in mainstream pop, especially not from an autobiographical point of view.
Mayberry sings about the weariness of trying to keep someone afloat: “I did everything I could to keep you on your feet,” she admits, before acknowledging that it could not last forever. “I live in the valley between what you said and what you meant to say,” she sums up at another moment, describing the anxiety of a relationship where words are never quite what they seem.
