Claudia Arenas went from being the first nominee of Operación Triunfo 2025, ultimately defeating Iván Rojo, to becoming the edition’s fifth finalist. She achieved it thanks to her beautiful timbre and her musical training, evident not only in her ability to play the piano but also in her musical taste, which led her to compete with songs as unusual as ‘Overjoyed’ by Stevie Wonder. Of course, her rendition of ‘Latin Girl’ by Emilia went viral on platforms and reached the official charts, being the only track from that edition to do so.
Arenas’ debut was therefore highly anticipated. Although her first release was the single ‘Gran Error’, published after her exit from the Academy, it was to be expected that, together with Sony Music, she would prepare a larger-scale launch to officially introduce her career. And that’s where ‘Como un imán’ comes in.
‘Como un imán’ is the acoustic-leaning song with which Arenas reintroduces herself to the public. The bright composition, co-created with the emerging artist Paula Felices, rests on a foundation of voice and guitar, then envelops itself in vocal harmonies and subtle electronic effects. However, unlike many of the singles that emerged from the edition, here the production architecture does not take precedence as much as the melody’s shine does.
More akin to Billie Eilish’s acoustic moments than to easy comparisons with Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo, ‘Como un imán’ is a romantic song that expresses a deep devotion for the beloved, though it is slightly hindered by that tendency, so common among many young artists today, to drag out or even mumble the phrases. Arenas sings about the fear she feels when that person doesn’t appear in her dreams and about the desire to wake up beside them every day.
That idealism conveyed in the lyrics is reflected in the sound, which evokes a kind of magical realism. And magical realism is precisely what the accomplished videoclip proposes, in which Arenas appears immersed in various everyday situations treated from a surreal perspective.
