On October 2, Fat Dog will release their second album, ‘Cancel Me (I’m Tired)’. Their first, ‘WOOF’, boasted hits such as ‘Running’ and ‘King of the Slugs’.
Fat Dog can tilt toward The Rapture’s swagger or the rough edge of Sleaford Mods, with equal ease. This is evident in the two previews we’ve had from the album: the title track, which they say was inspired by John Lennon but sounds tailor-made for the dancefloor; and ‘Go Fuck Urself’, a punk-infused—utterly sui generis—reworking of the Human League’s sound.
‘Shit Love’, the third single released today, is our Song of the Day. Fat Dog unleash all their energy in this track, a groove that sits somewhere between Primal Scream and The Streets, perfectly capturing that ‘live fast’ ethos that all debuting bands face. The lyrics drift from ‘it’s a nightmare coming for me’ and ‘I didn’t know being a bastard was your thing’ to ‘are you trying to finish me off?’ …, including ‘it’s Monday, it’s not my day to have fun’. The chorus keeps repeating ‘cooking with gas’, underscoring the sense of danger that the percussion conveys.
Perhaps a clue to their inspiration lies in the lives the seven members of Fat Dog have faced, according to Domino’s press release:
“At some point on that tour, we all suffered some kind of minor collapse,” says Chris, who recalls losing his head in Los Angeles, banging his head against the wall while wearing a football helmet (…) The leader of Fat Dog (Joe Love) got married in Las Vegas after proposing to his girlfriend in San Francisco. “We did a show for two people in Las Vegas,” Joe recalls, “and the next day I got married.” And so, with the depressed Elvis echoing in their ears, Joe came home and began working on Fat Dog’s second album».
