The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is finally approaching, as it drops on November 19, and with the game comes the soundtrack that will make some artists millionaires — or more accurately, even more multimillionaires.
With the full 34-track vinyl listing still to be revealed, today the first six recordings have been released simultaneously. These are six new tracks, and there is a bit of everything, as has been typical throughout the Grand Theft Auto series.
Morgan Wallen, the big country-pop chart-topper, keeps his gaudy edge in ‘Last Thing You Need’, with his usual questionable taste for cadences, progressions, and now synthesizers. It will be a sure-fire hit, as everything he touches. Meanwhile, Keith Richards delivers a blues standard, ‘Bright Lights, Big City’.
Among those with a more devoted audience, Yung Lean collaborates with Future and Metro Boomin. In this case, the track appears to begin as a kind of jazz or mid-risk R&B… only to become a 2015-style trap shortly after.
It’s early to guess where Travis Scott’s electronic track with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel will go. Not as accessible as his tracks with The Weeknd, ‘RHYNO’ could be one of the edition’s major growers; as with CA7RIEL’s, Paco Amoroso’s, PinkPantheress’s, Fred again, Étienne de Crécy’s and perhaps someone else I forget to mention. ‘Sexy Magic’ ends before you figure out whether it’s a great disco-funk, chillwave, synth-pop or… nothing at all, really.
Finally, a welcome surprise from Rauw Alejandro with a ‘Macacoa 2000’ that could have signed Villano Antillano — also recalling ‘Safaera’ and its samples — that aims to revisit the history of reggaeton. And to celebrate the party: “I’m dancing, I don’t want anyone recording.” A move that has not always paid off for Rauw and that was produced by Ninow.
