Jennifer Finch, a pivotal bassist for L7 during the band’s most influential years, has died at the age of 59 after a long battle with brain cancer that had been publicly announced the week prior.
The group confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement released on social media: “With broken hearts we announce that our dear bandmate, friend, and confidant Jennifer Finch has passed away today. She fought a long and brave battle against brain cancer. We love her.”
Subsequently, L7 shared another message: “We are devastated by the loss of our dear bandmate, sister, and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, sharp humor, and boundless creativity helped shape L7 and changed our lives forever. Jennifer was a true original. We love her beyond words. Rest in power.”
Finch joined L7 in 1987 and served as the bassist on landmark grunge releases such as Bricks Are Heavy and Hungry for Stink before leaving the band in 1996. She returned with the group’s 2015 reunion and contributed to their most recent album, Scatter the Rats (2019).
Beyond L7, she was involved with OtherStarPeople and The Shocker, founded the Little Pusher Records label, and pursued a prolific career as a photographer.
Last week, family and friends had organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover treatment costs, preserve her artistic archive, and complete one of her final creative projects. The fundraising has already raised around $400,000.
