Jorja Smith is back with what already stands as her third album, What Are The Odds, and the chances that the British artist will deliver another R&B gem that doubles as a dance-floor moment and a chance for reflection mid-track. “Dancing” is the Song of the Day.
Smith opens the track with a sequence of sharp questions: “Do you want to go dancing? Do you want us to hold hands? Do you want to take the risk? Do you want romance?” This unfolds amid the winter in the relationship, a phase where things feel stalled. Smith suggests that the only way to salvage the situation and return to being “lovers” is to reconnect on the stage.
The producer P2J crafts an R&B beat with measured house touches to support the song’s melodic range, and he manages to pull it off with very few elements: percussion, bass, synths, and subtle chops that accumulate toward the end. Here, the standout comes from Smith’s own creativity, filling the chorus with la-la-las and leaving us lamenting the track’s brief length.
