Coinciding with the kick-off of her World Tour, Traveling the World, in Chicago, Karol G has gifted her fans an unreleased track, “Matadora,” and has also given it the honor of closing the concerts on this tour, which we recall will bring her to Spain in 2027 with dates in Barcelona, Seville and Madrid.
“Matadora” is not the immediate hit that “If I Had Known You Earlier” was. If that mega-hit is the benchmark by which we measure today’s Karol G, “Matadora” falls quite short. Rather, it slips into that group of songs that Carolina Giraldo can write as if by the dozen, with her eyes closed.
The participation of Judeline is the most surprising aspect of the track, though “Matadora” does not reach the subtle magic of “Zahara.” If it weren’t for the shy trumpets weaving through the production, we would simply be looking at a fairly conventional sexually charged reggaeton. Karol adds some charm by talking about a “nasty” encounter with her butt, described as “fatty,” but “Matadora” doesn’t look like it’s going to become one of the essential titles in her repertoire.
The final stretch, notable for its predictable use of vocal chops, tries to inject an extra dose of dynamism into a song that unfolds with considerable indifference and barely reaches two and a half minutes in length. Without the hook of her best reggaetones, “Matadora” sits in a middle ground. Karol G has already proven herself to be a “BICHOTA”; as for “Matadora,” however, it lacks the finishing touch.
