Credit must be given to KATSEYE for firmly believing in their proposition despite what critics say. One cannot blame them when their singles perform so well on the charts. The problem is that no one can discern whether their music is an epic troll, a product of our era’s brain rot, truly good, or simply bad and disposable.
Perhaps their new music does not dispel doubts. Their new single, ‘Hootie Frutti’, returns to a trail of catchy phrases crafted for TikTok, with the title repeated ad nauseam as the main hook, while the instrumental base recreates the EDM punch of past eras. The truth is it may be their most club-oriented track yet, although it lacks the cutting edge of ‘Gnarly’ or the good taste of ‘Gameboy’.
Previously, ‘Animal’ was released, which has become a hit and remains strong in Spotify’s global top 20. The style is radically different, as it leans on a retro pop sound that is much gentler, friendlier, and pinkish, in addition to the involvement of Ed Sheeran, one of the writers. It’s mediocre: like a lesser version of ‘APT’ by Bruno Mars and Rosé. Both tracks, along with the indescribable ‘PINKY UP’, are part of the EP ‘WILD’, which drops today.
Meanwhile, in the past week it was announced that member Sophia Laforteza is leaving for mental health reasons, months after Manon was the first to depart. They have gone from six to four, though for the moment five appear on the EP’s cover and in the music videos.
