Tiny Habits are Cinya Khan, Maya Rae, and Judah Mayowa, three musicians who met in 2021 while studying at Berklee and who quickly drew attention for their meticulously crafted vocal harmonies. Among their fans are Elton John, who seems to be involved in just about everything, and David Crosby. They have dubbed them ‘prodigies of harmonies’, no less.
After releasing the EP ‘Tiny Things’ (2023), their debut ‘All For Something’ (2024) followed, and now they have just released ‘Keepers’, a second album in which they broaden their sound toward soul, R&B and disco without losing the harmonies that are their defining hallmark.
Among the tracks on ‘Keepers’ is ‘Love Ruins Everything’, an adorable retro-disco cut with echoes of Earth, Wind & Fire. The lyrics speak to that universal trap whereby, when love arrives, it obsesses you and ends up occupying everything: “When it’s happening, it’s that or nothing else”. And when it ends, it leaves you stranded, making what had seemed so important appear to have been ‘was all for nothing’.
The trick is that the music doesn’t seem overly concerned with such tragedy. Tiny Habits’ harmonies and the brass sound lively and bright, turning this small song about romantic wreckage into something closer to a celebration. Because yes: love wrecks everything, but at least you can dance.
