Madonna kicked off Pride Month with a landmark concert in the middle of Times Square.
If a godmother was needed to launch Pride Month, Madonna seems to take care of it. The queen of pop offered a surprise concert in the heart of Times Square, turning one of the world’s busiest squares into a vast open-air dance floor. At 67, Madonna has not lost any of her sense of spectacle. On Thursday evening, the artist made waves by appearing suddenly in Times Square, New York, to celebrate the launch of Pride Month. Organized in partnership with Grindr, the well-known dating app for gay and bi men, the concert drew hundreds of fans who came to witness a mini-show that was as political as it was festive, in a location highly symbolic for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Dressed in a pink corset and surrounded by dancers, the singer delivered several classics from Confessions on a Dance Floor such as Hung Up or Get Together, while unveiling tracks from her new album Confessions II. On the giant screens, the faces of major figures in queer history also flashed by, from Marsha P. Johnson to Keith Haring. A reminder that, more than forty years after her debut, Madonna remains one of the pop figures most inseparable from the struggles and celebrations of the LGBTQIA+ community.
