Madonna kicked off the VMAs with a medley from Confessions II that began with footage from her already iconic short film — featuring the green laser and the spoken-word segment on the dance floor — and culminated with a live performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.
Other artists who performed during the ceremony included Lisa, Sienna Spiro, and RAYE, the latter performing solo as well as part of a tribute to George Michael.
Madonna took home awards such as Best Dance, Best Collaboration, and Artist of the Year, while Taylor Swift received a special accolade for directing her own videos. In the end, Taylor won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” a win she dedicated to Dolly Parton for “making videos by writing songs.”
