Madonna leads the list of nominations for the MTV VMAs 2026, which will be held on September 27 in Los Angeles for the first time in nine years. The artist behind CONFESSIONS II racks up 11 nominations, surpassing Taylor Swift’s 9, with Swift and Beyoncé standing as the most decorated artists in VMAs history. The last time Madonna was the most-nominated performer at the VMAs was in 1998, when Ray Of Light won Video of the Year.
As we’ve already noted, Swift returns to the ranks of the most-nominated artists, this time with 9 nominations. She is followed by Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter with 7 each; Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson with 5; and LISA with 4. Madonna, Ariana, Bruno, Sabrina and Taylor will vie for the top awards in the most coveted categories: Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.
If we follow the trend of recent years, rewarding the longer formats—as with the All Too Well video, which won Video of the Year in 2022, and Brighter Days Ahead, which won Video of the Year in 2025—everything points to Madonna’s short film for Confessions II potentially meeting the same fate. Madonna is also nominated for Song of the Year (Bring Your Love, alongside Sabrina), Best Collaboration, Best Dance Song, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography, and Best Visual Effects.
