The Glitter campaign ranks among the most disastrous episodes ever seen in the pop industry. That summer, Mariah Carey was hospitalized due to mental health issues; the film’s soundtrack album was delayed and eventually aligned with the 9/11 attacks. From a commercial standpoint, it was a resounding failure, and the reviews did not offer much support either.
It was also the period when ‘Loverboy’ had to be changed at the last minute because it shared a sample with Jennifer Lopez’s ‘I’m Real’, following a betrayal by Tomy Mottola. Carey eventually swapped Virgin for Universal, an interval she calls one of the most stressful in her life.
Yet, over time, Glitter has been reassessed for its post-disco vibe and its peculiar homage to the 80s, and plans are underway for a reissue. Mariah Carey has announced that the album will return to streaming platforms under her own label (distributes “MARIAH”) and that a vinyl edition will also be released.
Apple Music reveals the release date as October 30, and further specifies the existence of a “Disc 2,” featuring 15 extra tracks alongside the original 12, still untitled. For now, we only know that track 4 is a remix of ‘Didn’t Mean to Turn You On,’ by a contemporary artist as prominent as Rochelle Jordan.
