The summer that has just bid farewell to the performer of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ is witnessing a total solar eclipse today, and in Spain it will be visible around 20:30, either wholly or partially depending on your location. The coincidence is so perfectly timed that it would be a missed opportunity not to seize it, and Martin Urrutia does just that with ‘When the Sun Kisses the Moon,’ a song that uses the phenomenon to imagine a love and desire story as intense as it is fleeting.
Written by Martin himself along with Adrià Arbona (Papa Topo) and Marco Frías (El Buen Hijo), the track opens with acoustic guitar and a warm vocal delivery that becomes especially moving in the chorus. “White little cove, the manta rays will cry,” he sings before the synths enter and lines like “your gaze will burn you” or “you’ll be left shivering when you see my silver crown” follow. Then soft electronic and organic percussion arrive.
The most beautiful moment arrives with that line, “look at me, but look at me, don’t stop looking at me,” in which Martin turns the sun into a lover and the eclipse into a kind of romantic encounter. “Come up to play in the lunar valley,” “when you come to the moon, the stars will awaken,” and “we’ll dance close together, around the campfire” complete an imagery of this song that sits between naive and mysterious. The song carries a sense of a fairy tale, yet also of a romantic and sensual fantasy.
