Mykki Blanco, known for blurring the lines between hip-hop, punk, and electronic music, presents ‘NYC Dogs’, the third preview from ‘CAFE PARADISO’, the album set for release in September.
Following the dance-punk of ‘Butt Sex’ and the alternative R&B of ‘Little Feet’, ‘NYC Dogs’ is an electro-punk production that, through jangly guitar lines, gritty synths, and driving drums, evokes the underground nightlife of old New York.
The repetitive chorus, ‘It was a dog in New York City’, acts as a mantra celebrating a nocturnal, queer, decadent New York, in keeping with the glam and post-punk aesthetics that inform the production.
The track, as if possessed by the spirit of Iggy Pop, features several memorable hooks, such as the drawn-out ‘hi-ayyyyyy’ in the chorus, and a smoky sax arrangement that enriches the production while contrasting with its punk sound.
‘CAFE PARADISO’ will be Mykki Blanco’s first album since ‘Stay Close to Music’ (2022). After that release and the EP ‘Postcards from Italia’ (2023), Blanco temporarily stepped away from music to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Switzerland. The new record, produced alongside Drew “FaltyDL” Lustman, promises to traverse different styles, from art pop to club music, in a work conceived as a “festival album”.
