‘Unplugged’ will no longer be Nirvana’s first major MTV milestone, although the second one may not be as memorable. The band will receive the Video Vanguard Award, the top honor for a career at the MTV Video Music Awards, during the 2026 ceremony, which will take place on September 27 in Los Angeles.
That the prize goes to a band that has been inactive for more than 30 years is striking, although not unheard of. The Beatles received the Video Vanguard in 1984, when they had already been separated for 14 years, and other acts such as R.E.M. and Bon Jovi have also accepted the honor. Kurt Cobain died in 1994, barely three years after the explosion of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
The music video for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ directed by Samuel Bayer, became one of the most iconic of the MTV era and won two Moonmen at the VMAs in 1992, for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video. Along with this, its other most memorable videos include ‘Come as You Are,’ ‘In Bloom,’ and ‘Heart-Shaped Box.’
Nirvana thus joins a list of honorees that includes Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, or Shakira, among many others. At VMAs 2026, Madonna and Taylor Swift are the most-nominated artists. The ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
