Remi Wolf returns with her first single in two years. ‘Twiggy’ marks the dawn of a new chapter for the American artist and is our Song of the Day. It opens with a strummed guitar, but grows until it bursts into punchy percussion, distorted guitars and synths. The melody shifts from emotion to catharsis.
The lyrics portray a relationship defined by attraction and dependence, built on highly specific images: a Lexus reversing through traffic, nicotine gum, someone else’s pool, or that ‘little Twiggy butt’ in the chorus. As the song progresses, the tone becomes sharper and descends into a back-and-forth of reproaches and resentment, summarized in lines like ‘You don’t fucking miss me / You just miss your mother’ or the devastating ‘God I fucking hate you’.
Regarding the meaning of ‘Twiggy’, Wolf has joked: ‘I wrote it about people I’ve been with who didn’t have either a butt or emotional availability. And about how that suits me. Or perhaps it’s just about the chaos of addiction. I don’t know, you decide’.
