In a BBC interview, Robert Smith confirmed that the band had already recorded its two forthcoming albums, with the third one slated to be very optimistic and pop.
This Friday, June 5, The Cure topped Primavera Sound in Barcelona. Robert Smith also made a surprise appearance alongside pop star Olivia Rodrigo to unveil a new duo, What’s wrong with me, taken from her third album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. In an interview on BBC Radio 6 Music on June 8, the Cure icon explained that the band had “recorded enough tracks for three albums” during the original sessions for Songs of a Lost World. “The second one is finished and it’s about to be handed to Universal,” Smith revealed.
A Third Album in the Works
Robert Smith also discussed a mysterious third album, “quite strange. Now that I’m doing all of this, people say: ‘Oh, it’s because he’s working with Olivia (Rodrigo)’, because this third album is actually very optimistic,” he says. “It is very pop, but melodically it doesn’t resemble what Olivia does. It’s more the vision I have of The Cure Pop. […] Compared to what we’ve achieved in recent years, it’s genuinely energetic. It hits hard.”
Regarding the upcoming record slated for release, Smith speaks of a more “darker” album than Songs of a Lost World. The singer explains that he recorded the project at home. “I was moved by the passing of many members of my family, and I wanted to mark that through the vocal performances, in particular, so that I could listen to them again and hold onto them,” he tells the BBC.
This summer, The Cure will tour the festival circuit and will stop in France several times, on July 24 and 25 in Nîmes, on August 28 in Bordeaux at the Place des Quinconces, and finally at Rock en Seine on August 30, 2026.
