‘She’s the Best’ isn’t an immediate banger like ‘Rush’. Instead, it offers a musical experience. Sivan delivers a whispered trip-hop, lightly sprinkled by the melody that appears when the title is spoken, and it leans more on storytelling and production than on chasing an easy hit.
Nor is it true that there’s only melody in the supposed chorus, since the production is full of melodic and instrumental details. It’s a multi-layered track that ultimately leads to an ecstatic finale. Yet it must be said that Sivan’s whispered voice in the verses is so intertwined with the production that you have to strain to understand what he’s saying. It’s a deliberate choice that favors immersion.
‘She’s the Best’ is an ode to his friends and portrays a party girl who roams about with semen stains on her dress, hasn’t slept, and argues with incels on the internet to vent, and for Troye she is simply “the best”. The music video is packed with characters, especially drag queens, though it features a cameo by Nicole Kidman, who portrays the subject to whom the song is dedicated.
