The football World Cup, which has crowned Spain champion for the first time in 16 years, clearly marks the novelties in this week’s Spanish singles chart. While “Dai Dai,” the official anthem of the tournament, remains at number 2, just behind Quevedo and Elvis Crespo, other tracks rise, enter, or re-enter the chart buoyed by football fever.
The main protagonist, of course, is Aitana, who lifts “Superestrella” several spots from where it stood last week, moving from 7th to 4th. The unofficial anthem of the Spanish national team remains strong after tallying 56 weeks on the list, though it has not yet reached number 1. At the same time, its international growth continues and it is already in the global top 35.
The influence of football players in pushing songs to the top becomes evident again with two of the week’s entries. Marc Pubill surprised at the Plaza de Cibeles by singing “Baby Lover” a cappella, and now this 2017 hit by Ñengo Flow debuts on the Spanish chart at position 39. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal has taken “Y qué fue” by Don Miguelo up to number 67 after naming it among his favorite tracks.
There is also talk of those other unofficial World Cup anthems that go beyond “Superestrella.” The famous “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan re-enters at position 58 thanks to nostalgia for Spain’s 2010 victory, since it was one of FIFA’s official anthems that year. And, sticking to home soil, “Un beso y una flor” by Nino Bravo has also gained popularity during the World Cup and now enters at number 71.
Finally, several songs that resonated strongly during the tournament return to the chart. “Como si fueras a morir mañana” by Leiva reappears at position 55, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and Wyclef Jean climbs to 78, and “Despechá” by Rosalía closes the list at number 99 after all of them went viral during the tournament.
Aside from the World Cup, a trio of tracks from the Madrid-based trap artist MVRK’s new album also debut on the chart. If “DAALE” is the most successful of the three, entering directly at 11, “3horas” appears at 82 and “2LATE” at 85.
